That's me, Rudy Brueggemann, on the crisp, clear morning of June 23, 1998, sailing down Søndre Strømfjord aboard the "Sarpik Ittuk" ferry. This was the maiden voyage of a KNI (the Home Rule ferry company) boat down the third-longest fjord in the world, starting in the town of Kangerlussuaq, the main airport for Greenland. (See this map of Greenland's west coast, courtesy of the of the Greenland Tourism Office.) Imagine towering rock walls, ice running to dead-calm water, and brilliant arctic light iluminating everything in yellow, orange, and gold light. Now imagine this for the 185-kilometer distance to the ocean. Please come along for the ride. |
