David Birnbaum and Dr. Lilian Goldschmidt of Arhus, Denmark, fled to Sweden in October 1943 to escape the Nazis' round-up of Jews in Denmark. The two Danish Jewish exiles were among the more than 7,000 Danes who successfully evaded the clutches of the Nazi death machine, due to the collective efforts of their families, friends, Danish resistance fighters, Danish fishermen, and the neutral Swedish authorities who a month earlier reversed their stance and agreed to accept the refugees. |
