At the Gross-Rosen concentration camp, one of the few remaining features is the hanging arm, found on the old "appellplatz," or roll-call square. Prisoners were often tortured and murdered at this stake, and similar ones found at many other camps. At the camps, executions often were in public. Bands played for the executions, and prisoners themselves were called upon to do the killing, if by hanging. |
