Henk Nieland was six years old when he witnessesed Nazis burn his home village of Putten, in the Netherlands, and round up the town's 661 adult men on Oct. 1, 1944. His father was among the detainees. The next day, the men were deported. Of the 602 sent by train to the Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg, only 49 returned alive at the end of the war. Nieland's father was among the thousands who had died in epidemics that swept through the Nazis' subcamps and main camp of Neuengamme at the war's end.
