Nazi Camps
concentration camp map, on display at museum

This Nazi map from the war era, on display for the public at a camp museum, shows some though not all of the camps built by Nazi Germany and its allies. There were 10,006 camps all told, according to camp authorities, including those cited in Wolfgang Sofsky's work on the camps called "The Order of Terror: The Concentration Camp." (See his notes, p. 292.) Many visitors to the camps are absolutely dumbfounded by this fact. At the Dachau concentration camp museum, visitors are greeted by a large map of Nazi Europe, showing where scores of the larger camps and subcamps were built. Were that wall-size map to include all the camps, it would have to stretch for several rooms. However, that wall map leaves most visitors stone silent.

Also, see this map published by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum for locations of the camps profiled on my camp photos page.
