| The Rhodes synagogue is no longer used for worship, except for high holidays. Less than 50 Jews in the once 1,700-strong Sephardic Jewish community remain on the island, such as Loucia Soulam seen in the distance. Nearly all of the island's Jewish citizens were sent to the Birkenau death camp, in Auschwitz, Poland, in the fall of 1944. Today, occasional tourists visit the memorial-museum. The plaque seen in the photo reads: "Cette chaire a ete offerte par Regine et Semam Franco en memoire des membres de leur famille Moshe et Mazaltov Franco Jocque et Rosa Franco et leurs enfrant Rachel et Aaron Isaac et Sol Franco et leurs enfants Marie Lea et Rabina Morts en deportation en l annee 1944." |
