Loucia Soulam, a Sephardic Jew born on the Greek island of Rhodes, was among 1,700 Greek Jewish citizens deported from Rhodes in the fall of 1944 to the Birkenau death camp in Auschwitz, Poland. Nearly all died. Soulam today is a caretaker of the synogague in the old town of Rhodes that now functions as a museum and memorial honoring the memory of the deceased. Behind Soulam is a list of some of the murdered families.
