| Kurds of eastern Turkey, like those seen in this photo taken in Kars, Turkey, live in some of Turkey's poorest provinces, where they make up the majority of the local population. Since 1999, nearly all violent activity by the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) has ended, with its former leader Abdullah Ocalan in prison. Violence in eastern Turkey claimed more than 30,000 lives, according to the U.S. State Department, and displaced anywhere from 400,000 to 1 million persons. |
