Alaska's money-making sophistication is tempered by its sourdough spirit. Alternative everything exists here. Living off the grid isn't an ideal, it is a reality for most of the state and many rural dwellers. Old trucks can often become lawn ornaments, but also speak much about the state's character. Placer gold mining, which once inspired a generation of settlers, is now a quaint hobby that seems, well, so retro compared the state's large, open-pit gold mines that now hunt for the precious metal.
