Before Imperial Russia sold what is now known as Alaska to the United States for $7.2 million in 1867, they established communities and Russian Orthodox Christianity in coastal communities from the Aleutian Islands to Sitka, their former capital, in the 1700s and 1800s. Alaska locations and landmarks still bear Russian names, such as Baranof and Chichagof islands. Remnants of the Russian cultural footprint can still be seen today, especially in Sitka, Alaska.
