Sitka, Alaska is my favorite city in the world, without question. Having seen a fair bit of the world, including five continents and Greenland, this is not hyperbole. It is a statement of my sincerest feelings for this town. I lived in this Southeast Alaska community of about 8,000 people in the summer of 1992, working as a newspaper reporter. It was one of the fondest experiences of my life. I've since returned twice, and the place retains all the magic that infected me more than a dozen years ago. The overlapping of Tlingit, Russian, and American cultures in Sitka, plus the stunning beauty of Baranof Island and its surrounding islands, not to mention the smell of the sea and the clouds that fall and form over the coastal area, cannot be fully appreciated unless one has experienced the community firsthand. Sitka, I'm very glad we've met. Please click on the images to see a larger version of each picture on a separate page. Each enlarged image is approximately 35-85kbs. |
